Site and Situation
The animation above describes the location of the site, and the
distribution of artefacts recovered in the 2001 and 2002 seasons. In
summary:
- The site is located on the North West Scottish coast just South of
Cape Wrath, a position which might be expected to suffer from severe
storms coming in from the northern Atlantic.
- Despite this the site is almost completely enclosed by reefs and
promontories. Peculiarities in the local bathymetry result in an almost
total lack of tidal movement, which results in very easy diving conditions.
- The site is split into deep water and shallow water portions, all of
the pottery finds have been made in the deepwater part of the site (the
focus of the feature above, the complete site bathymetry can be explored
in a 3D VRML, see link below).
- The bricks and olive jar fragments are in tight distributions, but
the high quality majolica ware is more scattered.
- Of the other objects
that we might expect to find on a shipwreck site only a small number
of heavy iron objects - cannon and anchors - have been found.

site can be explored in detail if you have a VRML plugin in your browser.
