Overview of studies undertaken

The small on-site laboratory used for simple measurements such as pH.

To investigate the processes occurring on the site we employed a number of techniques:

  • Bottom drifters were manufactured to standard designs to respond to light or stronger currents.
  • Corrosion Potential measurements determine the thermodynamic stability of iron or other metallic artefacts found on the site.
  • Stakes monitor oxidation rates of standard steel rods, and can also monitor sedimentation (deposition or erosion). Stakes are long term in all but the most dynamic environments - results from these had to wait until they were recovered in 2003 by the RAF team.
  • A small lab set-up allowed us to look at water and sediment quality.
