Dielectric Relaxation

FLASH file showing polar molecules (HCl) becoming aligned in an electric field.

Designed for classroom use, this movie is intended to assist students grasp an understanding ot dielectric properties with the assistance of a lecturer. The model depicted is simplified, showing the applied field freezing the orientation of the molecules, with an insert (top left molecule) describing the polar nature of the HCl molecule. When the field is switched off brownian motion results in collisions which slowly randomise the orientations of the molecules, and the sample's polarisation is lost. A graphical depiction of the decay in polarisation when the field is switched off can be displayed or hidden as required after the first polarisation event.
