Lying in between 20 and 35m depth of water, the Thesis is one of the most stunning wreck sites in the British Isles. The collision when she ran aground bent the stem post, and possibly loosened much of the forward plating, which has fallen away to reveal her ribs. Light streams through the gaps between the ribs, which are thickly encrusted with white and orange dead men's fingers. This view is of the winch seen looking forward from within hold 2 (see plan), and was generated from a sketch drawn in situ by the author Note: Survey of the site has shown the deck plating to be unstable, divers are advised not to penetrate the holds beneath decks. Good views can be obtained by descending within the hatch openings, where no overhead structures present a hazard in the event of collapse. See either the deck plan or the VRML model for more details on the survey work. Return to images |
